LifeStraw in use

Medway Rotary Club and Lifestraw

Medway Rotary Club has been working hard to increase awareness of the LifeStraw Project combining this with the important lesson for children of the value of water. David Hatcher has made a number of successful presentations at local schools and organisations. This has resulted in some brilliant donations towards our target.

  • New Road Primary School (Chatham) - £375.00
  • High Halstow Primary School (Rochester) - £750.00
  • Parkwood Infants School (Gillingham) - £600.00
  • Thames View Infants School - £150.00
  • Hundred of Hoo School (Strood) - £643.60
  • Fairview CPC School (Rainham) - £297.09
  • St John's CEVC Primary School - £100.00
  • Napier Primary School (Gillingham) - £733.79
  • Danecourt School (Gillingham) - £138.45
  • St Margaret's at Troy Town C.E. Primary School (Rochester) - £179.12
  • Gad's Hill School (Higham) - £1031.30

Aside from the support of these local schools, many donations have been received from other individuals, companies and organizations including a particularly generous gift from two American entrepreneurs - Christian and Tom (non Rotarians), from Santa Barbara in California, who had seen the appeal on our Club website and wanted to help to impact the lives of those "who never had a chance to succeed" - therefore they arranged a transfer to our bank account just before Christmas.

Our own Rotary Club members have supported the project through two sponsored walks and several raffles!

In May this year we received a wonderful cheque for 2000 Euros from our Contact Club in France - The Rotary Club of Roubaix.

As you can see the total raised has now exceeded £21,500.

But Medway Rotary Club will be continuing with this project throughout 2008 and into 2009 because 'ShelterBox' deserves our support! A number of schools have indicated their interest in running a fund raising event in the new school year.

So please keep on fundraising - the more funds raised - the more lives will be saved!

More than one billion people – one sixth of the world’s population - are without access to safe water supply. At any given moment, about half of the world's poor are suffering from waterborne diseases, of which over 6,000 – mainly children – die each day by consuming unsafe drinking water. The world’s most prolific killer though is diarrhoeal disease caused by bacteria. Safe water interventions have vast potential to transform the lives of millions, especially in crucial areas such as poverty eradication, environmental improvement, quality of life, child development and gender equality. LifeStraw was developed as a practical response to the billions of people who are still without access to these basic human rights.

This LifeStraw was designed with special emphasis on avoiding any moving parts, as a sealed unit with no replaceable spare parts, and avoiding the use of electricity, which does not exist in many areas in the developing world. But as force (power) is required to implement the filtering, the designer chose to use the natural source of sucking, something that even babies are able to perform. LifeStraw filters bacteria such as E. Coli, Shigella, Salmonella, Enterrococus and Staphylococcus Aureus.

The LifeStraw is capable of filtering up to 700 litres of dirty water - sufficient to keep an adult alive for a whole year, and a child for two years.

LIFESTRAWS WILL SAVE LIVES and at a unit cost of only £2.50 we think you will agree that you can't get better value anywhere!

Medway Rotary Club has committed to raise at least £22,500 in order to purchase some 9,000 LifeStraws for Shelterbox. These LifeStraws will be distributed by the Trust with their own Shelterboxes and be sent in response to world disasters as required.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support Medway Rotary Club and the LifeStraw Project. Shelterbox Trust Limited will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please support us now!
